A Patient’s Guide to Dentures

Which kind of dentures do you need?

There are a couple of choices to make when it comes to needing dentures. What you choose will partly come down to preference but will also depend on the degree of your tooth loss.

The first question is whether you need full or partial dentures. If you’ve only lost one or two teeth or if the damage is localized to a small part of your mouth, then partial dentures might suit your needs. When the damage is more extensive or if you’ve lost all your teeth due to gum disease, for example, then full dentures will be needed, giving you a complete set of teeth.

The other decision is fixed or removable dentures. Fixed dentures are generally more expensive than removable ones, but they have a lot of advantages. Patients tend to find them more comfortable and less hassle as they can’t move about in your mouth and you don’t have to take them out. They also help to prevent bone loss in the mouth and jaw compared to removable dentures.

How are dentures fitted?

After consulting with your dentist, the first step is to remove any remaining teeth or fragments of teeth, if required. You will then be asked to bite down into some dental putty in order to make a mold of your mouth. This mold will then be replicated in the form of dentures to match the shape of your mouth. During the initial period after having your dentures fitted, you will have to see your dentist regularly to decide if any adjustments are required.

More tips for denture wearers

Once you’ve had your dentures fitted, it will take some getting used to performing regular tasks with them in your mouth, like eating and talking. You’ll also have to learn how to clean them and look after them properly to keep them in good condition.
