Whether you have full dentures or partials, it is important to look after them properly just like you would for natural teeth. Even though your dentures won’t decay from improper care like regular teeth would, allowing plaque and bacteria to build up on them will affect your surrounding gums and any natural teeth you have left in the case of partial dentures. Dentures can also become stained if you don’t clean them, so taking proper care of them will help them look nice and bright and natural for longer.

If you’re a new denture wearer, then here are some tips to help you look after your dentures…

Brush daily

You should brush your dentures at least once per day. Avoid regular toothpaste as this can be too abrasive for dentures. Instead, use a cleanser or toothpaste that’s specifically designed for dentures. Alternatively, you can even use mild hand soap or dish soap to brush them. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or denture brush to gently clean your dentures.

You should also brush any remaining teeth you have in your mouth as usual, as well as gently brushing your gums that are usually covered by the dentures. Make sure you have separate brushes for cleaning your dentures and your mouth.

Soak dentures overnight

It is recommended that you remove your dentures overnight to allow your gums and mouth to rest, unless your dentist has told you to keep them in at night, which may happen when you first get them fitted. When not wearing them, you should keep your dentures in water or a solution to prevent them from drying out and losing their shape. Soaking your dentures overnight in a denture cleanser to help keep them clean and moist.

Rinse after eating

After eating a meal or a snack, you should remove your dentures and rinse them of any leftover food particles before putting them back in. This helps to prevent the build-up of plaque and bacteria.

Handle them carefully

Dentures can crack or break if you drop them, so it’s important to handle them with care. When you are holding them to rinse or brush them, it’s a good idea to hold them over a soft surface, such as a folded towel, or a bowl/sink filled with water so that they have a soft landing if you accidentally drop them.

Keep up with regular dental check-ups

Seeing your dentist regularly will help to make sure that your dentures are fitted properly and that you are caring for them correctly. You should have a dental check-up at least once a year, but see your dentist sooner if you are having any discomfort or other problems with your dentures or gums.
